Students in San Luis Valley have a wealth of resources - mountains, a canyon, a state park lake, and a university. In August of 2012, Adams State changed its status from “College” to “University” reflecting the academic growth of a campus defined by the slogan “Great Stories Begin Here.” Adams State University celebrates additional factors of the university as well, such as the highly diverse student body made up of 44% non-white students. In fact, Adams State is federally recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution with a 32% Hispanic population. In addition, the University continues to upgrade its facilities with technology updates and building renovations. And the campus offers a distance learning program that enrolls approximately 10,000 of its estimated 12,500 student body. Located in Alamosa, Colorado, the public co-educational Adams State began as a Normal School for degrees in education in 1921. Through the years, the University has expanded degree options and today students can choose from 16 undergraduate degrees with 28 minor options and 8 Master’s degree programs - the majority offered via distance education. Students can pursue studies in the fields of Business Administration, Interdisciplinary Studies, Government, History, and Sociology with multiple options for degree concentrations.

On-campus and distance learning degrees at Adams State University are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Select programs also have accreditation through the National Association of Schools of Music, Teacher Education Accrediting Council, and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. In addition, the University retains membership with institutions, like the American Council on Education, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and others.

The undergraduate online programs at Adams State University is housed in the Distance Learning program that incorporates online degrees, print-based correspondence courses, face-to-face instruction beyond the ASU campus, and professional development programs targeting K-12 educators and sponsored by school districts. Students enrolling in degree programs will need to submit an application and fee, along with additional documentation like official transcripts and test scores. International students will also need to submit official academic records and verification of financial support for one academic year. Furthermore, transfer students will need to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.30 for acceptance into ASU.

Non-degree seeking students can also enroll in distance learning online programs at ASU. Certificate programs include: Paralegal, Advanced Paralegal, LegalNurse Consultant Training, Legal Investigation, Legal Secretary, and Victim Advocacy. In addition, students can choose from more than 200 non-credit personal/professional enrichment and training classes, including test preparation courses for the ACT, SAT, GRE, and more. Furthermore, high school students can get a jump start on college via online college-level courses.

Admission requirements and prerequisites for the graduate programs vary and are degree-specific. General prerequisites include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and satisfactory grades. Students will need to submit the application and fee, along with typical documentation that may include official transcripts, GRE/MAT scores, letters of recommendation, a resume, and a letter of intent or personal statement.

Tuition at Adams State University is factored by various demographics.

Undergraduate tuition

  •     $221 per credit hour for undergraduate on-campus/off-campus in-state students
  •     $616 per credit hour for undergraduate on-campus/off-campus out-of-state students

Rates for graduate students is based on in-state/out-of state residency, on-campus/off-campus/online programming, and by degree. Rates range from:

  •     $214 - $310 per credit hour for in-state students
  •     $541 - $616 per credit hour for out-of-state students
  •     $294 - $395 per credit hour for online students, both in-state and out-of-state

For example, a student seeking to complete an online Master’s degree in Human Performance & Physical Education would pay $395 per credit hour regardless of state residency. In addition, tuition does not cover fees, such as the Technology Fee or the College service fee.

Degree-seeking students may qualify for financial aid at ASU. Aid includes loans, grants, work study and scholarships. Eligible students may qualify for the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, or the Colorado Student Grant. ASU also supports the Federal Perkins Loan, Stafford Loans, and the Parent PLUS Loan program. Multiple institutional and foundation scholarships are also available based on need, merit, in-state residency, along with other factors. In addition, Adams State is authorized by the Colorado State Approving Agency for Veterans Education  to support veteran’s benefits. ASU will evaluate prior learning and training experience of eligible military personnel in order to award possible transfer credits.
