Are There Good Online MBA Programs That Require NO GMAT or GRE?
Expert Advice  >  Online MBA
By Vicky Phillips, Chief Education Analyst

I’d like to earn an online MBA, but most seem to require the GMAT. I need a program with NO GMAT required. I’m VP of marketing in the real world, but my GMAT scores stink. Nothing I’ve done, including an expensive test prep program, has raised my scores. Can you suggest any top online MBA that does not require this exam or that other pesky exam, the GRE?

—Jack
Ticonderoga, NY
Low scores on the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Exam) hurt a lot of older business school applicants. Fortunately, a legion of reputable distance business schools offer the online MBA with NO GMAT required for admission these days.

Are There Ivy League, Top Ranked MBAs Online?
Expert Advice  >  Online MBA
By Vicky Phillips, Chief Education Analyst

Question:

Are there any top-ranked online MBA degree programs in the USA?

I travel for a living. I’d like to earn my MBA online because it’s virtually impossible for me to be in town attending class every week for 16 consecutive weeks.

But I’m afraid employers won’t accept a distance degree.

I work as an executive in a competitive career field: healthcare.

I’ll be working in a major metropolitan area (NYC) for the rest of my career and eventually want to open my own business.

Can you recommend even one top business school that offers a distance MBA degree?

—Joan Lundlin

Rochester, New York

Answer:

We can do better than just one suggestion. The Ivy League has gone Cyber League, and several top business schools offer distance or online MBA degrees these days.

Expert Advice  >  Online MBA
By Vicky Phillips, Chief Education Analyst

I’m looking for an online MBA (Master of Business Administration). I’ve found several that fit my budget but none of these are accredited by the AACSB. What is the AACSB? Do I really need a distance MBA degree that is accredited by them?

Roberta
Gary, IN

The AACSB is the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International. It is a voluntary, non-governmental accrediting agency that oversees the standardization of collegiate schools of business and accounting nationwide.

Hybrid MBA versus Online MBA: When and Why to Pay for Face Time

If Networking is Important to You, Definitely Opt for the Hybrid MBA

Top residential business schools — we’re talking Duke University and the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler — are spawning online MBA programs at lightening pace.

Yet every elite residential b-school has opted for an online hybrid MBA format. An online hybrid MBA delivers all courses on the web, but require spats of time on campus for what educators call “immersion experiences.”

UNC Kenan-Flagler, for example, offers an online hybrid MBA program where all required courses are offered on the web, but online students are required to attend three-day immersion weekends at the beginning of each quarter of enrollment. (Attendance is required at two of these immersion experiences each enrollment year.)

Attending an online hybrid MBA program that requires face-time can add up to $5,000 — travel, room and board, meals, time off work — to the sticker price of a distance degree.

Another possible hybrid bummer: You probably won’t be allowed to tap the company coffers to pay for that additional airfare and room and board required for those immersion experiences. Most corporate tuition assistance programs only reimburse for tuition.

The big question: is b-school face time really worth that extra wad of cash?
