New Study Shows Online Education Growing By 17 Percent

A new study of online education in the U.S. finds that more students than Learning on Demand, Sloan Report on Online Education 2009ever are taking distance learning courses —a 17 percent jump from 2007 to 2008.

Learning on Demand: Online Education in the United States, 2009 is the seventh annual survey of online learning produced by the Sloan Consortium. The study is based on responses from more than 2,500 colleges and universities.

Some key findings:

• In the fall of 2008, more than 4.6 million students took at least one online course—a 17 percent increase over the previous year.

About 40 percent of full-time U.S. university faculty have taught a distance learning course.

That's just one result from a new in-depth survey of technology usage compiled by Primary Research Group. "The Survey of Higher Education Faculty: Use of Educational Technology" includes the results of a survey of more than 550 higher education faculty in the U.S. and Canada. Results were released in January 2010.

University of Phoenix Lawsuit Settled for $78.5 Million

University of Phoenix logoA lawsuit filed six years ago against the University of Phoenix by two ex-admissions staffers has been settled for $78.5 million—in what lawyers say is one of the largest settlements of its type ever reached.

The university's parent company, the Apollo Group, agreed to pay $67.5 million to the federal government and $11 million in attorney's fees and costs for the plaintiffs. In doing so, the Apollo Group did not admit any wrongdoing, and executives for the company said they did not expect any prosecution from the Department of Education.

The University of Phoenix is expecting to pay up to $80 million to settle a lawsuit over its admissions practices, the school's owner has announced.Large University of Phoenix logo

The for-profit online school—owned by the Apollo Group—is being sued by two former admissions counselors charging it with obtaining federal student-aid funds under false pretenses.

Is online education as effective as face-to-face learning at the college level? 

The U.S. Department of Education analyzed research studies undertaken from 1996 to 2008 that address this topic and has concluded the following:

1) Online education is more effective than face-to-face learning;

2) Online learning combined with some face-to-face learning (blended learning) is the most effective;

3) Face-to-face learning alone is the least effective method among the three types studied.
