Higher education institutions offer students the opportunity to earn a valuable degree in the multi-level concentration of Nursing. The core curriculums of students pursuing the nursing profession can be taken within three types of degrees. Nursing is a challenging and rewarding profession that consistently builds on previous knowledge and coursework with required continuing education courses, even after the degree has been awarded. The Registered Nurse (RN), the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or the Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) are the primary degree levels. Within each degree, a student can specialize in a particular subject of study or obtain a general education.

A registered nurse (RN) is a nurse, who has graduated from a nursing program at a higher learning institution or a college or university. A RN is required to pass a national licensing exam, in addition to completing at least an Associates level of education. The primary function of an RN is to aid individuals, families, and groups to sustain optimum health, prevent disease and inform the public. Registered Nurses are limited in the amount of care legally allowed to be administered. They can provide for the sick and injured in hospitals or other health care facilities, physicians' offices, private companies, schools, and public health agencies. Many nurses become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or licensed vocational nurse (LVN) prior to earning the advanced RN degree.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is traditionally a four-year academic degree in studying the core science and principles of nursing. Only accredited university, colleges and schools have the authority to grant a BSN degree, because of the strict national standards applied to the curriculum. The BSN prepares nurses for advanced professional role, surpassing bedside care, with coursework in nursing science, research, leadership, and informatics. A Bachelor’s degree creates opportunities for graduates to enter important career advancements and earn higher salaries. The higher degree also qualifies graduates for positions in administrative, research, consulting and teaching of basic nursing knowledge.

Graduate students continuing their education by earning a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) may use the postgraduate education as the foundation for entry-level educator and manager positions. The advanced degree may also be used as a prerequisite for doctorate-level nursing education. Graduate nurses with an MSN degree satisfy the minimum requirements needs to become a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist, or nurse midwife.
