Law is a system of rules and regulations that provide the general population a standard of government. The law is established with two types of codes; civil law and criminal law. Civil law is the laws that govern incidents between individuals. Criminal law is the standard of behavior set for the betterment for society as a whole.

Courts serve as a venue from which individuals charged with an infraction of either civil or criminal law, can prove innocence, listen to testimony, plead, meet with defendants or prosecutors and administer sentencing. The propriety of the court is held by a judge, a jury and law enforcement staff.

Corrections serve as the institutions where individuals found guilty of a charge will serve out a sentence. A corrections facility can be minimum or high security dependent on the severity of the crime or guilty individuals can choose to serve out sentences on weekends or house arrest. Corrections officers are the law enforcement agents trained to oversee these prisons, jails or holding facilities.

Students pursuing a higher education in the area of Criminal Justice will use the curriculum as a solid foundation to supplement specialized courses in concentrations such as forensics, law enforcement, crime scene investigators, detectives, psychology, corrections officers, law, paralegal and many more.
