Another dynamic of the competitive business market is the presence of the Entrepreneur. An entrepreneur can be any person organizing a new project or opportunity within the context of business. A person in this dynamic role is often characterized as innovative, independent, optimistic, creative, and hard-working, as it is necessary to be all of the above when starting a small business. Students often enroll in a business degree program to prepare for personal adventures in creating a small business. Many higher educational institutions recognize the need for well-educated business owners for the survival of free enterprise, from an economic standpoint, and offer a business degree with an emphasis in entrepreneurship.

An entrepreneur can be described as a person who organizes and manages a business undertaking, assuming most of the risk for the sake of profit. Risk is perhaps the primary characteristic of entrepreneurship, though it does not mean the entrepreneur has infinite risk; instead, it clearly defines the limits as to how much risk is appropriate for a particular endeavor. The risk is the key ingredient to fueling innovative and creative ideas that can bring the owner the desired results.
An entrepreneur:

  1. Sees an opportunity.
  2. Makes a plan.
  3. Starts the business.
  4. Manages the business.
  5. Receives the profits.

Not all small business owners have earned a formal academic degree, however, students earning an academic foundation with a specialization in entrepreneurship can give graduates the advanced understanding of critical concepts in business such as; accounting, ethics, economics, finance, marketing and management. The foundations in core business courses will provide students the necessary skills in management, leadership and team building ethics to apply in small business ownership.

The ability of entrepreneurs to create and innovate is the source of recovery in many economic slumps. Entrepreneurs, by design, are motivated by risk and profit, thus creating the most efficient and effective products and services available to the public. The success of local economies is dependent on the education, experience and creativity of an individual small business owner.
