Fashion is a sweeping general term for the popular style or practice of wearing clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing and even furniture can considered in the contemporary view of ‘fashion’. The subject matter is the conceptualization of an idea, into a trend, that leads into an influence on the dressing styles of a particular person.

The term ""fashion"" refers to the practical analysis of clothing, style of dress, or interior design generally seen outside of a theater production and more casual in presentation. Clothing and home decorations create a broad cross-cultural communication and has solidified its place in society, reflecting status, culture and individuality. Fashion has blurred the boundaries of being feminine or masculine, by opening the opportunities for self-expression in either dimension. The history of fashion design begins around 1858, when the first true haute couture house opened in Paris. The haute house, named by the English government, for fashion designer houses that met the standards of the industry. The fashion houses must adhere to industry standards such as: keeping at least 20 employees engaged in making the clothes, showing two collections per year at fashion shows, and presenting a certain number of patterns to costumers. The four major fashion capitals are known to be Paris, Milan, New York City, and London, and are accredited for the major influence on global fashion.

What an individual chooses to wear or present in a home it can reflect that person's personality, status or interests. Fashions vary within a society according to age, social class, generation, occupation, and geography as well as over time. It is the role of the graduate of a fashion degree program to be aware of emerging and changing trends, as well as the other important factors within production such as merchandising, buying for retailers, textile skills, brand management and marketing. Students will enhance drawing, pattern-cutting and design skills, as well as learn a wide range of transferable skills, useful in many other career fields. Fashion design students will understand the importance of meeting tight deadlines, creative thinking, and working with a team and individually on projects.

Designers have the delicate vision of creating an object of fashion from a sketch, to a pattern, to a model making the necessary adjustments to fit needs and trends; and finally the finished model will be sent into mass production. The fashion industry is comprised of more than just drawing, cutting and making, it is its own product of intricate details of business. A degree in Fashion blends the key foundations of buying, writing, retailing, advertising, styling and management.
