Students pursuing a Health and Medicine degree can concentrate in the practice of Radiology. Radiology is a specialized medical profession that uses X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat injuries and diseases within the body. A Radiologist is the professional technician, physician, or medical staff member trained in the use of many imaging technologies such as X-ray radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) when diagnosing symptoms.

A radiologist will use the advanced education from a medical career college, college or university to read and interpret the digital images, from a variety of cameras, machines, and imaging equipment. The information obtained from the images will assist physicians and nurses when developing a treatment plan for a patient. X-Rays are produced by transmitting rays of unseen light through a patient, converting it to an image on film that is able to be seen or ‘read’ with plain sight.

The professional radiography technician will use the core courses in a Health and Medicine degree curriculum to satisfy the minimum requirements needed to sit for certification exams such as the USMLE exam, state medical license, passing the board certification exam in Radiology, and obtaining hospital privileges and credentials. Radiologists, just like medical doctors, nurses and medical assistants must have a comprehensive understanding of the human anatomy in addition to the medical and scientific principles relating to health. The evolving technological advancements in medical imagery require radiologists to be technologically competent because of frequent work on computers.

Graduates of an advanced degree program in the Health and Medicine field can use the concentration in Radiology to enter the competitive job market with the critical knowledge and skills needed to succeed as a professional working with peers and patients. The medical professional can use curriculums designed for specific focuses within radiology, such as oncology or mammography, to further personal aspirations in addition to enhancing career potentials.
