Students of a university, trade school or college can pursue an advanced education in the area of law or paralegal studies. Earning a degree in law and paralegal studies can build a solid foundation for further educational aspirations or serve as the required minimums to secure a current career position. Students of a law program can use the specialized coursework to enter fields of criminal justice, administration, psychology and many more. Students of a paralegal program can use the legal curriculums to seek positions within law firms, legal aid, paralegal assistants, government and many more. Both concentrations are generally combined into one program that encompasses the basic knowledge and understanding of core concepts and topics related to both career paths.

A higher education in the area of law and paralegal studies will strengthen a student’s awareness of essential concepts of criminal behavior and legalities behind judicial action. Successful students can also combine a law concentration with a major or a minor in political science, economics, environmental studies, psychology to name a few. The added focus of another specific concentration will specialize the graduate’s abilities, therefore becoming a sought after and/or intrinsic individual to criminal justice or law organization.

Law is classified as the societal standards of rules and guidelines enforced to provide the greater good for a population. Law can be divided into two categories; Civil law or criminal law. Civil law represents the rules applied to conflicts between individuals. Criminal law is designed to govern behavior that is deemed harmful to the society as a whole.

A Paralegal is a paraprofessional qualified to assist a lawyer with daily tasks and functions designed to uphold the law. A paralegal is not a lawyer, and is limited by state statutes to the extent of what functions they can and cannot complete when assisting lawyers. A paralegal can sit for certification exams to further specialize and to also maintain continuing education requirements.

Graduates of a law or paralegal program will be able to enter the competitive job market with the advanced understanding of core legal proceedings, administration abilities and a solid foundation for future career aspirations for becoming a lawyer, police officer, criminologist, federal agent, criminal psychologist or legal advisor in a business setting.
