The study of English is an academic discipline that encompasses literatures written in the English language as well as the production and analysis of texts created in English (or in areas of the world in which English is in common usage). Academic departments of many colleges and universities include concentrations beyond the English language and literature. The multi-faceted fields of study within the discipline of English can delve into literary criticism and theory, linguistics, law, journalism, composition, communication, cultural studies, creative writing and various courses in media, liberal arts and humanities.

The degree provides students an opportunity to develop skills in analytical reading with the aim of improving writing, rhetoric and persuasive expression and classical studies. The English major requires a much broader range of topics that reach across multiple disciplines while emphasizing the core skills of: analyzing literature, creativity and imagination, and understanding different cultures, civilizations, and literary styles from various time periods. To culminate the entire curriculum, students will end an English program with the necessary knowledge and skills to clearly and persuasively express ideas in the written form.

Future employers value the ability of English majors to write effectively, think logically, organize evidence persuasively, interpret language and express ideas orally. Upon completion of an English degree program, graduates will gain attributes required in professional positions of business, government, research, education and publishing. Potential career opportunities outside typical business organizations include cultural, entertainment, and communications industries, that also rely on the expertise of an educated communicator. English as a major course of study is versatile and will develop useful skills in many career fields.
