Students pursuing a Health Science degree may choose to focus on the profession of Dentistry. Dentistry is the study of health care specializing in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and conditions of the oral cavity. Earning a degree in dentistry can lead to many successful career opportunities within the field. Students can enroll in courses focusing career opportunities as positions as dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental technicians and a Doctor of Dentistry.

Students must hold at least a high school diploma before entering further dental education programs. A school of dentistry can be offered at many credible institutions such as colleges, universities or technical trade schools. The higher education facilities require dental program students to complete courses in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and statistics/calculus to provide the solid foundation for the following health and medicine courses related to dentistry. Students completing a Bachelor’s degree in health and medicine, or earning a dental certificate from an accredited institution can sit for the Dental Admissions Test (DAT).

To become a licensed dentist, students must complete an accredited dental school curriculum and satisfy all clinical competencies and national board exams. Students wishing to pursue assistant positions will not have to complete the same programs, but are required to meet national and state regulated standards. Dentists, assistants and hygienists must also participate in lifelong learning, participating in continuing education courses, ensuring the most current and up-to-date procedures and information are being performed. Graduates can further their education in dentistry by pursuing specializations in complex procedures, such as general anesthesia, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and implants. These procedures require a higher level of education in addition to the traditional Bachelor’s degree and dental school certification.

Graduates of a Health Science degree program in Dentistry can enter the competitive job market with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as a successful professional in the field.
