Students pursuing degrees in areas of Art or Liberal Arts are considered to be students of general studies programs. The purpose of individuals gaining knowledge in these areas is considered to be essential to an education. The term Liberal Arts, refers to the ancient Greek and Roman era where only educated ‘free people’ were allowed to participate in civil actions. The important topics of liberal arts discussions were seen to improve on math, science, engineering, accounting and economics studies in most advanced education facilities of that time.

The long standing tradition of ensuring students a broad curriculum at colleges, universities and other institutions uses the general education requirements to build a student’s foundations of understanding. These foundation courses delve into topics of music, social sciences, history, literature, ethics, religion and languages. Students of colleges and universities are allowed to enroll in their degree specific programs only once they have satisfied the minimum requirements of the general education courses.

The medieval churches decided on the 7 core components that comprised the collegiate level liberal arts areas of study:

The Trivium: grammar, logic, rhetoric

The Quadrivium: arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy.

The aim of these 7 areas of study was to educate an individual as virtuous, knowledgeable, and articulate. The education of humanism as an area of concentration, in addition to liberal arts, created the most modern of curriculums that students participate in today. Higher education establishments encourage students of Bachelor and Associates degree programs in liberal arts to enter careers with the advantage of a formal education in the necessary skills and concepts to function as an informed member of society.
