Students at higher learning institutes can earn an advanced degree in the area of Engineering. Engineering is a broad subject that can be sub-divided into many different specializations. Engineering is defined as the study of the application of scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design, build, and maintain structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. The varied types of basic engineering specialties can be sought after at most career colleges, technical schools, colleges and universities. Advanced degrees in engineering are required for most types of integral working environments. One such specialty in engineering is with Environmental Engineering.

The critical role of an environmental engineer is essential to the study of technological advancements that impact local and foreign environments. The emphasized curriculum associated with an environmental program of study will introduce students to the fundamentals of environmental issues such as the effects of acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution and air pollution from automobile exhausts and industrial sources. Universities and colleges offering an advanced degree in Environmental Engineering programs will follow similar programs in Civil Engineering and or Chemical Engineering as all programs involve topics and concepts related to the influence of the environment.

The American Engineers' Council for Professional Development has defined ‘engineering’ as:

The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation or safety to life and property.

Engineers, in general, are responsible for the design and development of most modern marvels in production. The required coursework, certifications, professional credentials and internships for students in an engineering program are not limited to any one specific realm of engineering, as many different types of engineers are involved in most projects. Electrical, aerospace, mechanical, environmental, civil and chemical engineers are specialized areas, that when combined contribute to the constant evolution of new technologies.

Graduates of an Engineering degree can use the learned knowledge and skills to advance in current careers or to fulfill minimum standards for additional degree pursuits. Earning a degree in engineering is almost as important as which institution grants the degree. Students wishing to pursue advanced degrees in the various types of engineering will want to consider which colleges and universities are best suited to offer the most reputable education.
