Lisa Brown, 36, is the Assistant Director at Texas A&M University's Office of Extended Education, a proud mother, and she is the winner of a GetEducated.com $1,000 Excellence in Online Education Scholarship. Brown will use the free college grant toward her online Master of Arts in Adult Education at Northwestern State University.
In 1999, Brown joined Texas A&M University staff as an advocate for online education when it was still a fairly new concept. Now living in Franklin, Texas, she plays a major role in the school's distance degree program for Government and Public Service. Brown is currently in charge of three online graduate certificate programs.
"I successfully served as Interim Director for six months increasing enrollments and improving processes; however I could not apply for the position of director that I served successfully in due to the 'master's degree required' pre-requisite," explains Brown. "The opportunity to move up in my career as well as to keep improving my skills is a huge motivator to continue my education."
Brown obtained her undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, but chose to pursue her Masters in Adult Education at Northwestern State University for several reasons. After researching online alternatives, she learned NSU is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools.
In addition, Brown recognized NSU's excellent value and its no residency requirement—suggesting the courses must be taken 100% online and she would not be expected to visit the campus in Louisiana.
Now in her second semester in the online masters program, Brown notes the flexibility of distance learning. She is now able to complete her coursework in the evenings after her kids have gone to bed. Brown says, "I love to learn. I actually look forward to studying because I find it relaxing at the end of the day." She also notes that NSU's platform is easy to use and her online advisor has been very helpful in choosing the best courses in the education program.
Brown's two daughters are three and four years old and they have inspired her to continue studying for her Masters degree. She says, "By making school a priority in our daily family routine, I hope to serve as a good example for my daughters and provide them with a bright future." GetEducated.com offers free college scholarships and grants to online students bi-annually in the spring and fall. The deadlines for these distance learning scholarships are March 15 and October 15.
