Our founder, Vicky Phillips, is proud to have been cited by US News & World Report (Sept. 2009) as "for 20 years the leading advocate for online college students."
Going Back To School Online
CNN's Gerri Willis interviewed Vicky Phillips on March 7, 2009, as part of a "Your Bottom Line" report about how online education can help recession-hit consumers find new or better jobs. Willis also highlighted some of GetEducated's features, including the Best Buy degree rankings and the Diploma Mill Police.
In addition, Willis recommended GetEducated to Larry King Live viewers on March 6:
"...It's going to be a while, at least a year, maybe longer, before the jobs market turns around. But for people like the fellow I was just describing, who have only a high school degree, you've got to get some more education. GetEducated.com can tell you about colleges that are offering online programs that are accredited, actually make sense, doesn't cost you a lot of money."
WCAX-TV, the CBS affiliate in Burlington, VT, interviewed GetEducated CEO Vicky Phillips and featured video of Chester Ludlow, the pug dog and owner of an online MBA (plus Chester's pal, Bixby).
Online Schooling Picks Up Students—and Respect CNBC reports that the recession has resulted in a "growing importance" for online education, as well as growing acceptance. The article notes that distance learning can produce cost savings for students:
According to Vicky Philips, founder of GetEducated.com, a website ranking online programs in the US, online programs usually cost as much as regular classroom programs. What really lures many into taking courses online is it allows people to compare tuition and opt for more affordable programs without leaving home.
“It’s the first time they can chop on cost and shop for education,” Philips says.
U.S. News & World Report wrote about options to a traditional four-year campus-based college degree. One option: distance education. For this aspect of the story, US News interviewed Vicky Phillips, GetEducated CEO and founder, about the pros and cons of studying online.
"The Web has become a national shopping mall for higher education, or so says Vicky Phillips, for 20 years the leading consumer advocate for online college students.
"The pro side is that if you go online, you have more choices," she says. "The biggest con is that there tends to be a much higher dropout rate than a residential college ... Some [online programs] can have dropout rates of 70 percent, where 30 percent would be a high rate for a traditional campus." But when a program suits the student, online education can be a worthy alternative: A Department of Education study this year found online teaching just as effective as face-to-face instruction. The student's abilities to learn without the structure imposed by class attendance and to overcome the tendency to procrastinate are the crucial factors, Phillips says.
"Nursing programs are highly regulated because this career involves public health and safety. A good expert on postsecondary study in nursing and other fields is Vicky Phillips. Phillips is the chief education analyst for GetEducated.com, a great Web site that evaluates accredited online degree programs and educates consumers about them."
So begins an article by career columnist Joyce Lain Kennedy in the LA Times on Aug. 18, 2009. Kennedy interviews Vicky Phillips about using online degree programs to update nursing credentials and advance in the profession. Read the full article here.
