University of Phoenix May Settle Lawsuit for $80 Million

The University of Phoenix is expecting to pay up to $80 million to settle a lawsuit over its admissions practices, the school's owner has announced.Large University of Phoenix logo

The for-profit online school—owned by the Apollo Group—is being sued by two former admissions counselors charging it with obtaining federal student-aid funds under false pretenses.

U.S. Dept. of Education Finds Online & Blended Education More Effective than Residential Method Alone

Is online education as effective as face-to-face learning at the college level? 

The U.S. Department of Education analyzed research studies undertaken from 1996 to 2008 that address this topic and has concluded the following:

1) Online education is more effective than face-to-face learning;

2) Online learning combined with some face-to-face learning (blended learning) is the most effective;

3) Face-to-face learning alone is the least effective method among the three types studied.

According to our most recent web poll, more than 90 percent of respondents say cost is “extremely” or “very” important in selecting the best online college. Less than 3 percent reported that money “doesn’t matter.”

Warren National University, Unaccredited Online College, Closes

Warren National University, of Wyoming, announced in February that it will no longer accept online students. Warren National, originally known as Kennedy-Western University, began offering unaccredited college degrees through distance learning in the 1980s. The distance-learning-only college operated from California and Idaho before migrating to Wyoming.

The university encountered problems when it was cited as a "diploma mill" after awarding degrees based on life and career experience to high-ranking federal government officials. The federal government's 2004 sting operation specifically cited Kennedy-Western University as a "degree mill."

Girls in Afghanistan Learn Online

Hundreds of Afghan girls in war-ravaged Kandahar have been able to continue their educations by going to school online, according to the Pajhwok Afghan News.

Last year, about 200 girls were allowed for the first time to take online classes at the Afghan-Canada Social Centre, the news agency reported. The girls are taking courses in English, computer science, project management, business management and journalism.
