GetEducated.com: History and Mission

About GetEducated  >  News Releases

GetEducated.com is a consumer group that publishes online college rankings and online university ratings along the dimensions that matter most to online students themselves: affordability and credibility.

Founded in 1989 by Vicky Phillips, a psychologist and educator, GetEducated—in partnership with America Online and the Electronic University Network—developed America’s very first online counseling center for adult distance learners.

Today, GetEducated remains the only consumer group in the United States dedicated to assisting students in comparing and rating accredited online colleges and universities.

Our mission: Help consumers make informed choices about the second most expensive purchase most will make in their lifetime -- a college degree.

We provide unique tools that help consumers rate and compare more than 3,000+ online degree programs.

GetEducated.com also serves to protect distance learners from the dark world of online education fraud through innovative free services, such as The Diploma Mill Police, a database that chronicles consumer alerts on more than 200 degree mills which operate fake online colleges.

Unlike other ”online college directories,” which operate as lead generation mills, GetEducated is staffed by higher education experts who evaluate every college or school that applies to our online education site for a listing.

We accept no pay per lead advertising
We don't take your data and sell it to the highest bidder.
We are not a lead generation mill.

Because we aren't paid by the schools for each student lead we acquire we are free to research and reveal data on every college in the United States.  We are able to publish the data we collect as it relates to cost, credibility, and student satisfaction.

And we publish this data whether it reflects favorably on any one college or not.

Our online degree ranking and review lists are editorially independent, designed to meet the needs of consumers who are looking to honestly compare options.

Comparing data helps consumers see who truly offers the best online degrees along the dimensions of cost, public perception, and verified student satisfaction.

In an effort to educate consumers about all their options, including many non-profit and state colleges with great distance learning programs but $0 in Internet ad budgets, GetEducated offers free basic directory listings to accredited colleges and universities

And we remain the only online college directory that bars advertising from fake Internet universities.

Quantity and Quality

Most online education sites list 10 online MBAs, with half of these offered by unaccredited colleges. GetEducated profiles 400-plus online MBAs – each one guaranteed accredited.  And not to brag, but we profile more than 1,200 distance masters - the largest directory online.

Objective reviews and rankings of online colleges according to cost and credibility

Unaccredited colleges are barred from our site

Online colleges accredited by bogus agencies do not appear on our site

Degree mills—fake Internet universities—are not allowed

We pledge to protect you—the consumer—by fearlessly blowing the whistle on 200-plus fake online colleges and higher education scams

Help consumers get educated about college cost and credibility so they can choose with confidence the best online education programs.

As a part of our mission, we support a Distance Learning Scholarship Fund. These $1,000 scholarship awards are based on need and scholarly ability.

We also offer special online college scholarships for women and moms in partnership with Core 4 Women, a free online community that helps women understand and enlist the power of online education to improve their lives and careers. For more details, visit our scholarship page.

GetEducated.com - Vermont Business for Social ResponsibilityEach month our employees designate a new charity to benefit from our online university reviews project.  We donate a $1 to charity for each valid college review left on our site.

As a Vermont company, we are aware of the need for a more sustainable approach to business. Rather than buy fiber board desks for our office our operations manager hand crafted wooden desks. He used reclaimed floorboards from Vermont farmhouses and discarded beams from Recycle North of Burlington, VT.  Each desk, like each member of the GetEducated.com team, is both unique and organic.

GetEducated is a member of Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility, a non-profit agency dedicated to fostering a business ethic in Vermont that recognizes the opportunity and responsibility of the business community to set a high standard for protecting the natural, human, and economic environments of all citizens.
