Regarding accreditation...while it doesn't happen often, accrediting agencies reserve the right to revoke an institution's status if it doesn't think that they are maintaining standards.
This actually happened in June to Dana College, a school with a long history (founded in 1884) near where I live. Due to financial issues, the plans were to have them be bought by a corporation and run as a for-profit institution.
The Higher Learning Commission did not approve the deal, saying that the new for-profit entity would not be regionally accredited. As a result, the college unfortunately had to close. Full details are here:
