Regarding accreditation...while it doesn't happen often, accrediting agencies reserve the right to revoke an institution's status if it doesn't think that they are maintaining standards.

This actually happened in June to Dana College, a school with a long history (founded in 1884) near where I live. Due to financial issues, the plans were to have them be bought by a corporation and run as a for-profit institution.

The Higher Learning Commission did not approve the deal, saying that the new for-profit entity would not be regionally accredited. As a result, the college unfortunately had to close. One more school that might be worth look into is the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Unlike many universities, it's a "graduate-only" school, which offers only masters or doctorate degrees.

Looks like Oregon State University offers their PhD in Counseling in a "hybrid" learning format. While primarily online, students meet face-to-face twice each quarter for a Friday-thru-Saturday session, for a total of 16 visits.

Looks like an interesting program, but prospective students should already have a number of hours of clinical experience under their belt before they get started!
