Some "Old School" deans, teachers & others in education that I have spoke with seem to feel that online = lazy, too easy, ineffective, etc. I am not sure if they are afraid to look outside the box or if they are looking at the wrong or inaccurate data. I tend to lean toward online learning not fitting into their mold of what education is "supposed" to look like.

There is resistance to change in every new innovation. So, most teachers are against online since they think they will be jobless. If they are not smart they will be. Today all teachers should learn how to become a good online facilitator, how to become a good online developer. In every innovation, somebody will be jobless so prepare yourself.

Today 5.9 million students out of 18,000,000 students are taking ONLINE courses. It will be 15,000,000 in 5 years .

ONLINE is fantastic.
ONLINE is for millions. Therefore it costs nill.

My Model for quality and nill cost:
1. Student and his advisor prepare a degree program. At
HOME College.
2. Advisor selects every year 5 face to face courses
from the HOME College and 5 ONLINE Courses out of
10.000 courses available from other colleges in USA.
3.- Students take online courses and credits from these
colleges and credits are transferred to HOME College.
4.- When students completes 120 credits at HOME College
he is awarded his degreefrom HOME College.

Results :
1. ONLINE Courses are taken by millions of students of USA.
Therefore cost of online course becomes nill.
2. ONLINE Developing colleges make money and they make
better online courses.
3. Bad ONLINE courses are eliminated from the market
since they are not selected by advisors.
4. Quality of HOME College is increased since advisors
select only best online courses.
5. Capacity of all colleges in USA are doubled.
6. There is no cost problem of colleges, everybody can go
to college. Cost is nill, quality increased.

All that is needed to do this is a decision by the Association of Colleges.

Thank you for posting this Kayleigh; I can understand Diane's frustrations. I feel that online education is subject to the same range of quality, effectiveness, and student satisfaction as any other means of class/course delivery. Even though 5.9 million students are enrolled in online courses, there is still a lot of ignorance and inexperience surrounding online education. This lack of exposure allows for these types of stories to perpetuate and classify online education as inferior by default.
