In the US there are of course likewise lots of great free online courses but a battle as to letting students use what they learn on their own for degree credit. Here we have a council — ACE — that will review what they call “non-collegiate” education for degree credit equivalency. That’s been going on for 50 years — but as I said that process needs a re-conceptualization if consumers here are going to be able to benefit.

I am currently teaching myself using a mixture of methods and media, as there are no current collection of MOOCs that fit the standard I am aiming for (UK A-level). I feel as long as there is a continued push for open education resources, then people will be able to access a much more affordable type of learning.
