Job Interview

I’m worried about employer acceptance of my online degree. I just completed my bachelors online and am ready to send out my resume. Should I use my cover letter to reveal to potential employers that I earned my degree online?

—Holly, Nashville, TN

These days, taking college or post-secondary courses online is not an oddity. In 2010, more than 85 percent of traditional residential colleges will offer college courses online or through distance learning.

Online education is no longer the future. It’s right now.

As a result, there is no need to reveal in a cover letter or resume that you “earned your degree online.”  Details about why you chose any particular type of school—such as a private school versus a public school or a Christian college versus a secular college—are best left to discussion during an actual interview.

Carolyn Cooper once toyed with the idea of getting an MBA, but instead became a professor of literary and cultural studies at the Carolyn CooperUniversity of the West Indies.

When Cooper learned about Chester Ludlow—GetEducated's pug dog mascot—being awarded an online MBA from Rochville University, she again considered netting herself an advanced business degree.

"To think that a dog had more ambition than me!" Cooper wrote in a recent column in the Jamaica Gleaner. "I decided to apply to Rochville for a PhD in chemistry. Why chemistry? Why not? I have good chemistry."

Cooper manufactured the following chemistry "experience" on her application to Rochville: being "good at chemistry in high school" and working for 20 years at a Jamaican producer of household chemicals.

Within 15 minutes of emailing her application to Rochville, says Cooper, a representative from the school called her to find out if she had a bachelor's or master's in chemistry.
