Should You Get a Student Loan to Attend Online College?
Online College Financial Aid  >  Online College Student Loans
By GetEducated.com Consumer Reporting Team

Ivan Sanchez is two months behind on his online college student loan repayments. He owes $1,400, and soon will owe nearly $2,000. He has a new baby—his third—at home, and just $300 in the bank.
Five years ago, Sanchez earned an online associate degree in networking and security from EPCI College of Technology plus an online bachelors degree in management from the University of Phoenix Online, in hopes of advancing his IT career. While his employer chipped in $15,000, Sanchez was left owing college debt of $45,000.{{LeftSponsor46}}
Sanchez was promoted, but his $10,000 raise wasn’t enough to keep up with his online college student loan payments.
Sanchez is not alone. Nearly half of all students graduate from online college degree programs with unmanageable student debt, according to Marc Scheer, author of No Sucker Left Behind: Avoiding the Great College Rip-off.

The big question: Will online student loan debt be worth the final price of an online university degree?

Military and Veterans Education BenefitsVeterans education benefits allow eligible military personnel to earn a degree online at very low-cost. Some vets can even earn a free degree by taking accredited online courses.

However, not all veterans education benefits are equal. Benefits vary, depending on where veterans live, and where they choose to attend school.  Special rules apply to distance learning programs as opposed to campus degrees.

Some veterans may be better off using the old Montgomery GI Bill (MGI bill), while others may receive more benefits using the newer, Post-9/11 GI Bill, which went into effect in 2009.

Here are 5 keys to understanding and using your military distance education benefits wisely. Use this checklist and you may be able to earn an online degree without paying a penny.

Regional vs. National Accreditation: Which Is Better for Online Colleges?
Expert Advice  >  About Diploma Mills & Online College Credibility
By Vicky Phillips, Chief Education Analyst

Help! Comparing online colleges is an overwhelming task. I have a list of more than twenty possible colleges. I’m favoring one online university that is accredited by the Distance Education & Training Council (DETC). Is the DETC a valid accreditor? Will my online degree be widely recognized? My career counselor told me national accreditation (like the DETC) is not as good as regional accreditation. Which is best when it comes to online colleges: regional accreditation or national accreditation? And does it really make any difference?

The truth? One type of online college accreditation is not necessarily “better” than another if you take “better” to mean “better academically.” However, there are real benefits to attending a regionally accredited college versus a nationally accredited college.

Chester Ludlow, a pug dog from Vermont, has been awarded an online MBA degree (Masters in Business Administration) by Rochville University—an online college that offers life experience online degrees.

Chester is believed to be the first dog to be awarded an online masters degree based on work and life experience credentials.
But did he earn it—or did he buy it?
“The difference between earning a college degree online or buying one is key,” says Vicky Phillips, founder of GetEducated.com.
Chester is the GetEducated.com mascot. In May, he submitted his resume—along with $499—to Rochville University online. A week later, on June 5, 2009, an express packet arrived from a post office box in Dubai.
