MarketWatch reviews the growth of online degree programs and turns to GetEducated.com's chief analyst, Vicky Phillips, for expert advice and source data on how select the best online university and avoid Internet rip-offs and online education scams.

An estimated three million people this fall will go online to take a college class. Since 2000, GetEducated.com says enrollment in Internet-based higher-education coursework has grown at an average 35 percent yearly clip.
Along the way, a more mature and stable market for online education is developing, says Vicky Phillips, chief education analyst at GetEducated.com, which operates a consumer-oriented Web site to educate prospective online students, tracks the market and conducts independent research into industry wide trends.
"There are definitely more phony schools than valid, accredited universities offering online degrees," Phillips said. "But someone willing to do their homework and become an informed shopper can find a lot of solid options to choose from these days."
